Two Cumberland residents are now facing multiple drug trafficking charges after deputies uncovered a mix of controlled substances inside a residence on Baltimore Pike. Authorities say the case quickly turned serious once heroin, fentanyl, and other drugs were confirmed at the scene.

On July 26, deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on Baltimore Pike in Cumberland on Monday after reports of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, they immediately noticed signs of controlled dangerous substance activity visible through the main entrance.
That detail changed everything. Officers moved closer to confirm what they were seeing, and the situation quickly shifted from a routine response to something more serious. The presence of drugs in plain view gave them clear reason to act without hesitation.
When deputies knocked, Barbara Blowe stepped outside, then suddenly shut the door and tried to block them from entering. That moment escalated the encounter further, and officers arrested her on the spot for obstruction and hindering their investigation.
Once inside the apartment, deputies found Christopher Athey attempting to conceal multiple controlled dangerous substances. That detail matters because it signals awareness and intent, not confusion. Officers secured the scene quickly, preventing further movement or destruction of evidence inside.
After the residence was under control, investigators obtained a search-and-seizure warrant to go deeper. That search uncovered what authorities described as a large amount of heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine, all stored within the Cumberland apartment.
Officers also recovered marijuana, methamphetamine, a digital scale, and an undisclosed amount of cash. A firearm was located as well, which deputies said was used during and in relation to drug trafficking activity, raising the seriousness of the case.
Barbara Blowe now faces multiple drug-related charges, including possession of methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, alprazolam, and clonazepam. She is also charged with three counts tied to intent to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine, along with obstruction of officers.
Christopher Athey faces many of the same drug charges connected to the substances recovered inside the Baltimore Pike residence. What sets his case apart is an additional charge tied to possessing a firearm during and in relation to drug trafficking activity.
Both suspects are currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center in Cumberland. That decision reflects the volume of drugs involved and the presence of a weapon, factors that often lead courts to treat cases with heightened concern.
