CNN New Years Eve

Each New Year’s Eve, CNN hosts a live broadcast party to mark the end of one year and the start of another. This CNN New Year’s Eve broadcast has become very popular on social media. The party, usually hosted by Anderson Cooper and featuring appearances like Andy Cohen and Don Lemon, typically includes much drinking, resulting in wild drunkenness. In the past, Anderson Cooper's New Year’s Eve broadcast has ended in embarrassment for many anchors.

Will CNN New Year’s Eve 2023 feature drunk reporters?

CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht spoke about on-air drinking at a town hall meeting, and said that when hosts get drunk, it can reduce their ‘respectability’ in the eyes of their viewers. He encouraged those being broadcasted not to drink on air during CNN New Year’s Eve 2023, except for Anderson Cooper and his co-host Andy Cohen.

However, the announcement was met with much disappointment on social media. It appears as though viewers enjoy seeing anchors such as Don Lemon, drunk. This prompted Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen to announce about the upcoming New Year's party, “[We] are going to party harder than we have ever partied before on New Year’s Eve.”

Many people would like to know: what are Andy and Anderson drinking this year? They obviously have every intention of drinking as they have in previous years. They are famous for their Fresca and tequila shots, and it is predicted that they will assume the same practice this year. Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen New Year’s Eve 2023 broadcast is likely to feature the same amount of drunkenness as always.

What will Don Lemon New Year’s Eve 2023 look like?

At the end of the year 2021, Lemon did a ‘Broke Dick’ performance. Many other performances over the years also did not reflect well on Lemon and his image. The call to appear more sober on air during CNN New Year’s Eve broadcast means that he will have to enliven the atmosphere and entertain viewers in some other way. Don Lemon's NYE 2023 performance will look very different from previous years.

Why is it important that CNN's Broadcast plans to sober up?

The fact that a major news channel has recognized the damage of excessive alcohol use as a means of entertainment is a huge step in the right direction. Although responsible drinking is okay sometimes, many people are unable to control their alcohol intake.

Excessive alcohol use damages internal organs, such as the:

  • liver
  • heart,
  • pancreas, and
  • brain.

Additionally, it interferes with the brain’s communication pathways - affecting one's mood, behavior, and coordination. On-air drinking can normalize excessive drinking, which has negative effects on everyone.

Public drinking can exacerbate an alcohol addiction for people already struggling, and present a challenge for people recovering from alcohol addiction, causing a relapse. As a society, it’s important to recognize that we can celebrate milestones differently- without alcohol, drugs or even food.

The Public Role Played by CNN New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Being a part of society means that we all have a responsibility towards one another. Especially powerful and/or influential people have to be careful not to promote unhealthy and damaging habits to the public. The CNN New Year’s Eve parties are viewed by millions, nationwide. CNN has the power to influence people either positively or negatively. Reducing or doing away with drinking alcohol on air will send positive messages about the influence of alcohol to all CNN’s viewers, helping to combat the over 3 million annual addiction - related deaths worldwide.

If you or someone you know are struggling with alcohol addiction, it’s a good idea to seek support before New Year’s Eve celebrations. Finding the right support can mean the difference between getting dangerously drunk and finding techniques and resources to stay sober- even as those around you consume alcohol easily. Reach out to a rehab center or a reputable support group for assistance today.
