A shocking case out of Indianapolis has raised serious concerns about the dangers of cannabis edibles in households with young children. Demetrius Barnes, a 62-year-old grandfather, is facing a felony neglect charge after his 2-year-old granddaughter reportedly overdosed on THC-infused gummies that were left within her reach.
According to police, the incident occurred on July 8 at an apartment on Dianella Way. Officers arrived to find the toddler unconscious and unresponsive. She was rushed to Riley Children’s Hospital, where medical staff confirmed THC in her system. Thankfully, the child was stabilized and is expected to recover.
Authorities say the child consumed the THC-laced edibles between 3 and 4 a.m., but it wasn’t until a 16-year-old family member found her unresponsive hours later that help was sought. The teen called the girl’s mother and eventually dialed 911 when the child didn’t wake up.
Court documents allege that Barnes repeatedly urged the teen not to contact police, claiming the child “just needed to sleep off” the effects of the gummies. Despite the clear medical emergency, Barnes failed to call for help, a decision that led to his arrest.
“When you have these children, you are their advocate and their voice,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson. “You have an obligation to report anytime they may be experiencing a medical emergency.”
Barnes later told investigators he didn’t think the gummies were dangerous and believed they only contained CBD. However, the child’s reaction and toxicology results proved otherwise. Under Indiana law, Barnes’ failure to report the incident and seek immediate care for the child qualifies as felony neglect.
The case highlights growing concerns about cannabis edibles—particularly how their packaging can appeal to children and how potent they can be. Experts urge adults to store all THC products securely and out of reach from minors.
