A 49-year-old Baton Rouge man with prior drug convictions is back behind bars after deputies say they uncovered a prescription pill distribution operation tied to multiple homes. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office reported seizing more than 280 lethal doses of fentanyl.

Investigators said the arrest follows a new probe that included controlled purchases and search warrants executed at three properties. Deputies noted they were already familiar with Marcus Clayton from a 2020 narcotics case, calling the latest arrest part of ongoing efforts to curb distribution.

Controlled Buys and Investigation Background

Deputies reported the investigation began in January after a tip alleged prescription pills were being distributed in Baton Rouge. Investigators did not rush it. They conducted two controlled purchases to check the information and strengthen their evidence before moving ahead with search warrants.

Officials said Marcus Clayton was familiar to them from a 2020 narcotics case. He pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to distribute Schedule II drugs. He received five consecutive one-year sentences and served roughly three years, from 2022 until 2025.

During the 2026 investigation, agents identified three Baton Rouge residences they believed were used for trafficking. Deputies said they documented transactions, verified the locations, and built a clear trail of evidence before planning a coordinated enforcement action across the sites.

Search Warrants and Seized Evidence

On Feb. 24, agents executed search warrants at three Baton Rouge addresses: Lake LaDare Avenue, Lebanon Street, and East Marsden Place. Deputies reported seizing 28.7 grams of fentanyl, estimated as about 280 lethal doses.

Investigators also listed 1,561 dosage units of carisoprodol, plus oxycodone, extended-release Adderall, tramadol, alprazolam, and hydrocodone. They reported THC gummies and wax, vape cartridges, psilocybin chocolate bars, and about 1.2 pounds of marijuana.

Deputies said they seized digital scales and packaging materials, along with $25,916 in currency pending seizure. Two vehicles are also pending seizure: a 2021 F250 Platinum and a 2015 Cadillac Escalade, plus a Ruger .22-caliber handgun.

Charges and Recidivism Context

Prosecutors have filed numerous felony counts against Clayton, including distribution of Schedule II narcotics and possession with intent to distribute under different classifications. Investigators also cited money laundering, transactions involving drug proceeds, and firearm-related violations tied to the investigation.

Records indicate he pleaded guilty in 2020 and was sentenced to five consecutive years on two charges. He ultimately served around three years before release. “We take repeat trafficking seriously,” a sheriff’s office representative stated.

LaRonda Joseph, 57, was also arrested and faces several distribution-related charges as well as possession of drug paraphernalia. Officials say situations like this renew ongoing debate about recidivism and whether post-release supervision is truly effective.

Endnote

Debate continues in Baton Rouge over how to address repeat drug offenses, especially when prescription pills and fentanyl are involved. Some residents call for tougher sentencing, while others argue long-term prevention and treatment must play a bigger role in reducing harm.

Local officials say future court proceedings will determine the next steps, but community impact remains the larger issue. As one deputy put it, “Every case like this reminds us what is at stake.” For now, prosecutors move forward, and residents watch closely.
