Maryland Traffic Stop Turns Into Heroin Bust After Brief Pursuit

A routine traffic stop in Lexington Park quickly escalated into a heroin arrest after deputies say a driver accelerated away and tossed a bag from his vehicle. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office said the incident unfolded during proactive patrol operations Sunday.

Jamal Kedrick Demetrius Davis, 29, was taken into custody after deputies recovered the discarded bag, which they say contained suspected heroin. Authorities also reported finding drug paraphernalia and nearly $5,000 in cash during the investigation.

Traffic Stop Escalates Into Short Pursuit

Deputies were conducting proactive patrol operations along Great Mills Road on Sunday, March 1, when they saw a driver fail to stop at a traffic light. Instead of pulling over, authorities say the vehicle accelerated, triggering a brief pursuit through Lexington Park.

During the short chase, a deputy reported seeing the driver throw a plastic bag from the vehicle window. According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the car stopped a short time later, and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

Deputies quickly returned to recover the discarded bag, which officials said contained suspected heroin. The sequence unfolded within minutes, authorities noted, underscoring how routine patrol work can shift rapidly when a driver chooses not to comply with a stop.

Suspected Heroin and Cash Recovered

After making the arrest, deputies conducted a search of the car and the driver. They reported discovering suspected controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia and almost $5,000 in cash. Officials said that combination naturally led them to question whether distribution might be involved.

Sheriff’s officials said the exact weight of the suspected heroin has not been made public yet. The material will be sent to a lab for testing and confirmation. In narcotics cases, investigators tend to look closely at large cash amounts found with packaging supplies.

Law enforcement leaders regularly remind the public that heroin continues to fuel addiction and overdose cases across Maryland. By removing suspected drugs and cash from circulation, officials argue they are cutting off supply lines and helping protect communities dealing with opioid-related problems.

Charges Filed Against Lexington Park Man

Authorities charged the 29-year-old Lexington Park resident with possession of heroin and possession with intent to distribute. He also faces counts of destroying, altering, or concealing physical evidence, along with possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, these charges reflect what deputies say unfolded during the encounter. Each count carries potential penalties under Maryland law, and prosecutors will determine how the case proceeds in court.

Court records show he was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown. As with all criminal cases, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty, and the judicial process will decide the outcome based on presented evidence.

Endnote

Situations like this often bring back the same ongoing debate about how to handle drug problems. Some people support stronger patrols, believing they discourage trafficking, while others think more focus should go toward treatment.

Public health experts keep warning that heroin is still tied to overdose deaths across Maryland. Enforcement alone has not erased the danger. Now the case moves to court, where evidence will be weighed under legal standards, shaping both the outcome and future policy talks.
