Marcus's Story

Finding supportive friends is important. Finding friends who support your recovery journey is even more important. Watch to see how Marcus found friends for life during his recovery journey that will continue to support his sobriety.

My name is Marcus, and this is my story.

I had surgery on my foot two years prior to coming here. That put me in a really depressed stage because I was better in about 19 months. I started using, I ended up using and abusing my medications, and I just kept on going down, down, down. I don't know what sparked it, but I beat someone almost to death. I had no recollection of it.

I called around. Avenues was the only place willing to accept me. It felt good because it wasn't just being accepted, it was about being understood as well. You know, honestly, at first it was a little hard for me. I had three young men. I talked to my boys and I let them know that daddy has to go and get help. It was something that I know I needed to do and they understood it. They're very smart. I always tell them they're geniuses. I'm so proud of them. And anytime I tell them that I'm proud of them, they say they're proud of me, and it means the world to me.

And that's why I knew this was something I needed to do. I had no self-love. I wasn't confident. You know, and the support that I've gotten here, and the love I've gotten here, not just from my staff, but from my community. You know, it's... I can't explain it. It's like...

I'm so empowered now, so motivated to do what I want to do. Avenues has given me purpose, you know? It's shown me what my purpose was. If you're a father and you want treatment, come here seeking that treatment with open arms and acceptance because you will get the truth. It's not going to be sugar-coated. It's not going to be easy to evaluate yourself, but it's something that's necessary, and Avenues pushes you to do that.

I mean, right now, I can tell you I'm on top of the world. Like, I miss my babies to death. I got to see them, and I threw the football with them for a little while. And, you know, it was just an amazing feeling. As soon as my youngest saw me, he started crying when he gave me hugs. And, of course, that was emotional. But he understands, and they all understand. And I really feel empowered now, and I feel great about myself now.

Avenues has given me myself back.
