Bringing Addiction Recovery Resources Directly to the Community

Every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning, Uplift Them provides free meals at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 1015 E. Main Street in New Albany, Indiana. Led by Amanda and Jason Ingle, the volunteer organization serves individuals experiencing homelessness and others facing difficult circumstances throughout Southern Indiana. Recognizing that food insecurity, homelessness, and substance use challenges can overlap, Uplift Them collaborates with local organizations to provide support beyond meals. Avenues Recovery Center in Clarksville is among those partners, regularly participating in outreach events to help individuals learn about available addiction treatment services. According to Amanda Ingle, Avenues Recovery volunteers serve alongside Uplift Them during the first weekend of each month, building relationships with community members and helping connect those interested in treatment with appropriate resources. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to meeting people where they are and making recovery support more accessible.

Connecting Individuals With Addiction Treatment in Southern Indiana

For individuals experiencing homelessness, accessing addiction treatment can present significant challenges. Transportation difficulties, limited resources, and uncertainty about where to seek help can make taking the first step toward recovery especially difficult. Avenues Recovery works to reduce these barriers by bringing information and direct support into the community. Katina Morgan, an alumni coordinator at Avenues Recovery, participates in outreach efforts at Uplift Them's meal services. When someone expresses interest in addiction treatment, Morgan works to connect them with the Avenues Recovery admissions team as quickly as possible. In some instances, she has even accompanied individuals directly from the church to treatment. However, Morgan recognizes that not everyone is immediately ready to seek help. To make recovery resources more accessible, Avenues Recovery also distributes bracelets featuring its admissions phone number. These allow individuals to reach out privately when they feel comfortable exploring treatment options. This approach acknowledges an important reality of addiction recovery: readiness for treatment can develop over time, and a supportive conversation today may encourage someone to seek help in the future.

Community Partnerships Provide Essential Support

During a recent Wednesday evening meal service, volunteers from Uplift Them, Avenues Recovery, and Catalyst Rescue Mission came together to serve dinner to community members. Catalyst Rescue Mission sponsored the meal, while Avenues Recovery representatives attended to share information about addiction recovery resources. Attendees enjoyed lasagna, bread, salad, and desserts donated by Toni T's Cobblers & More Bakery in Charlestown. While providing meals addresses an immediate need, these gatherings also create opportunities for connection. For someone experiencing homelessness or struggling with substance use, having a consistent place to receive food, speak with volunteers, and learn about available services can be an important source of stability. By collaborating, these Southern Indiana organizations are helping build a community support network that addresses both immediate challenges and longer-term needs.

Addressing Barriers to Recovery and Stability

Uplift Them's outreach extends beyond its regular meal services. On Saturday mornings, volunteers provide meals at St. Paul's Episcopal Church beginning at 9:45 a.m. They also distribute day bags to individuals who may have difficulty reaching the church. According to Jason Ingle, changes in statewide public camping laws have made some individuals experiencing homelessness more hesitant to disclose where they are staying. This creates additional challenges for volunteers attempting to reach people who may already have limited access to food, transportation, and other essential services. To help address transportation barriers, Uplift Them operates a bicycle donation program. Community members can donate bicycles in working condition or in need of repair. A volunteer mechanic helps restore donated bicycles so they can be distributed to individuals who need transportation. These bicycles can help people travel to work, attend appointments, access addiction treatment, or reach other important destinations. For individuals working toward recovery and greater independence, reliable transportation can make a meaningful difference.

Why Community Outreach Matters in Addiction Recovery

Addiction recovery is not always a straightforward process. Individuals may face challenges involving housing instability, financial hardship, limited transportation, or difficulty accessing healthcare. Community outreach programs can help bridge the gap between individuals who need support and the organizations equipped to provide it. By participating in Uplift Them's meal services, Avenues Recovery creates opportunities for individuals to ask questions about addiction treatment in a familiar, welcoming environment. These conversations can help reduce uncertainty surrounding treatment and introduce people to resources they may not otherwise know are available. Importantly, outreach also allows individuals to explore their options without pressure. Whether someone is ready to begin treatment immediately or simply wants information for the future, access to compassionate guidance can help support informed decisions about recovery.
